1. Simply place the Astralign into the eyepiece holder and rotate the instrument until the "N" on the compass lines up with the telescope tube, make a small local adjustment for your true north deviation, then lock the azimuth axis. The compass is for general direction alignment only. The magnetic field produced by your scope and the light may not allow the compass to move freely. It is best to do this before turning the telescope's power on.
2. Flip the Astralign over to level the tube perfectly every time. The red led in the eyepiece allows you to do this without losing your night vision or needing to hold a light over the level to check it. Lock the axis and that's it - you are ready to hit enter and make a perfect alignment!
The Astralign works with all Meade ETX telescopes as well as all other Goto scopes such as the LX series or any scope that needs to be northern-aligned and leveled. The three fluorescent dots on the Astralign help level the scope, simply align them with your tripod legs and telescope tube and raise the leg(s) the bubble is away from. This saves loads of time trying to figure out which legs to raise and lower. (It is always better to raise one tripod leg than lower it, this allows you more control over weight on the tripod.) To level your tripod, line up the fluorescent dots with your tripod legs and raise individual legs until level. The fluorescent paint shows up well under very low light conditions as well as under red light of the led. The compass is in the bottom end of the Astralign and makes it easy to line up with the telescope tube.
The light is activated when the you twist the level, there is no external switch on the unit, simply twist the level either direction until the battery makes contact and the led lights up. To turn off the light simply twist until it shuts off. The Astralign-light runs on one 3 volt calculator battery which will light your Astralign for over 25 straight hours and takes about 30 seconds to replace.
The Astralign is lightweight, durable, and will not scratch your eyepiece tube or any other assembly in your scope.
The tube assembly is less than one inch long so it will not hit or rest on the ridge inside the eyepiece assembly tube of smaller ETX scopes, which sets only one inch from the top to prevent longer eyepieces from striking the diagonal mirror. This ensures a completely flat contact between the Astralign and the eyepiece assembly.
